Why Digital Citizenship Week

  • Building responsibly cyber communities has become a necessary conversation with around 66% of the world population having access to internet. In low- and middle-income countries, nearly 70 percent of those who do not use the internet are held back by deficiencies in digital literacy according to a world bank report.
  • According to a UNICEF report, One in three young people in 30 countries have been a victim of online bullying, with one in five reporting having skipped school due to cyberbullying and violence affecting connected classrooms . A previous report by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ranked Kenya “Poorly” in protecting minors from online bullies.
  • A Seamless integration of Digital citizenship in connected classrooms will prepare to be positive contributors of the cyber communities.
  • There is a growing need to develop robust programs that sensitize citizens on their role in dual citizenship as they navigate conventional land citizenship with the emerging cyberspaces technologies that require adoption of netiquette in shared online spaces.
  • The digital citizenship week will engage policy makers, technology platform program officials and influential content creator, educators and private sector leaders to drive the adoption and mainstreaming of responsible digital citizenship.

About Digital Citizenship Week

  • Digital Citizenship Week first began in 2010 with the launch of the “Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum” by Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) in collaboration with Common Sense Educations.
  • Their primary aim was to offer advice and guidance to enable children to make ethical and responsible decisions in online spaces and when using technology platforms.
  • In Kenya, Responsible Digital Citizenship became an integral part of the Kenya Social Media Awards from 2016.
  • Citizens were sensitized on misinformation during electioneering period and their role in creating cohesive cyber spaces.

Digital Citizenship Week 2024

  • The International Digital Citizenship week has been themed “Building Responsible Cyber Communities in a Privacy first world” and will be held on 14th - 18th October 2024.
  • The event will bring together leaders including policy makers, teachers and content creators to sensitize them on the need to support the campaign for responsible digital citizenship.

  • Work with policy makers to create favorable environment for responsible digital citizens

    Content Creators Seminar

    • The content creators full day seminar themed “Promoting SRHR Content in a privacy First World” will be held on 18th October 2024 at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.

    The seminar will bring together 150 participants including content creators, program officials and healthcare sector representatives to explore:

    • How to create compliant SRHR content that can be distributed in different digital platforms
    • Promotion of digital content that promotes safe sexual practices through age-appropriate education
    • Promotion of family appropriate content that empower young girls and women with factual and timely sexuality information.
